The
following short stories come from the English and Thai
editions of Readers Digest. The first two stories have
English translations. The last two are only in Thai. It
is up to you to work out what they mean!
THAI:
แม่ผมฝันอยากเรียนเปียโนมานานแล้ว
พ่อจึงใจอ่อนซื้อเปียโนให้เป็นของขวัญวันเกิดในที่สุด ไม่กี่สัปดาห์หลังจากนั้น
ผมโทรกลับบ้าน และถามว่าแม่เรียนเปียโนไปถึงขั้นไหนแล้ว
"เอาคืนไปแล้วละ" พ่อบอก "พ่อพูดจนแม่เห็นด้วยว่าน่าจะเล่นแคลริเน็ตมากกว่า"
"ทำไมละครับ" ผมถาม
"เพราะเวลาเล่นแคลริเน็ต
จะร้องเพลงด้วยไม่ได้" พ่ออธิบาย
ENGLISH:
My mother had always wanted to learn to play the piano,
so dad bought her one for her birthday. A few weeks later,
I called and asked how she was doing.
"We returned
the piano," said dad "I persuaded her to switch
to a clarinet."
"Why?"
I asked.
"Because,"
he explained, "with a clarinet, she can't sing along."
THAI:
ลูกชายของเพื่อนพึ่งเรียนจบชั้นมัธยม
ฉันจึงส่งการ์ดไปแสดงความยินดี พร้อมกับเขียนข้อคิดเล็กๆน้อยๆ
และแนบเงินเป็นของขวัญไปด้วย
หนุ่มน้อยเขียนตอยกลับมาว่า
"ขอบคุณนะครับ สำหรับคำแนะนำและของขวัญ แม่บอกว่าน้ายังมีของขวัญอีกเยอะ"
ENGLISH:
My friend's son graduated from secondary school,
so I sent a card to congratulate him. I enclosed some
money and scribbled some words of wisdom inside.
He sent me
a note back saying, "Thank you for the gift. Also
thank you for the advice. My mum always told me that you
are full of it."

เพื่อนผมได้ตั๋วฟรีมาหลายใบสำหรับเข้าชมฟุตบอลฤดูกาลใหม่ในปีนี้
เขาบอกว่าเมื่อปีที่แล้วก็ได้ตั๋วฟรีหลายใบ และพยายามแจกให้เพื่อนๆ
จนเหลือ 2 ใบสุดท้าย เมื่อไม่รู้ว่าจะเอาไปแจกใครดี เขาจึงใช้วิธีเหน็บตั๋วไว้ตรงที่ปัดน้ำฝน
ขณะจอดรถในห้างสรรพสินค้า
"แล้วมีคนมาหยิบไปไหม"
ผมถาม
"หยิบน่ะไม่มี
มีแต่เอามาวางไว้ให้อีก 6 ใบ" เขาตอบ
ขณะสังสรรค์เฮฮาอยู่ในร้านอาหาร
ผมกับเพื่อนกลุ่มใหญ่เห็นผู้ชายโต๊ะข้างๆ พูดกับผู้สนทนาทางโทรศัพท์มือถือว่า
ขอให้ถือสายรอสักครู่ แล้วออกไปพูดต่อข้างนอกร้าน
พอเขากลับมา
ผมก็ทักขึ้นว่า "รอบคอบจังเลยนะครับ"
"ทำไงได้ล่ะ
ในเมื่อพวกคุณคุยกันเสียงดังขนาดนี้" เขาตัดพ้อ
