งานช้างจังหวัดสุรินทร์

สุรินทร์ เป็นจังหวัดในภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ ที่รู้จักกันเป็นอย่างดี ทั้งประชาชนชาวไทยและนักท่องเที่ยวชาวต่างประเทศในฐานะที่เป็น “เมืองช้าง” จังหวัดสุรินทร์ได้จัดให้มีงาน “การแสดงช้าง” ติดต่อกันมาเป็นเวลา 30 ปี โดยกำหนดจัดงานในวันเสาร์และวันอาทิตย์สัปดาห์ที่สามของเดือนพฤศจิกายน ชาวสุรินทร์ดั้งเดิมที่เลี้ยงช้างเรียกตนเองว่า “กวย” นั้น มีความชำนาญในการคล้องช้างป่าและฝึกช้าง ปีนี้การจัดงานช้างของจังหวัดสุรินทร์นับเป็นปีที่ 38 ซึ่งจะจัดให้มีขึ้นในวันที่ 14-15 พฤศจิกายน ที่สนามแสดงช้างในตัวเมืองสุรินทร์ การแสดงของแต่ละวันจะเริ่มเวลา 08.30 น. และสิ้นสุดลงในเวลา 11.30 น.

การแสดงของช้างในปีนี้จะมีการปรับปรุงในสิ่งใหม่ๆ ประกอบด้วยการแสดงที่มีชื่อเสียงรวม 7 ฉาก ซึ่งจะมีช้างเข้าร่วมแสดงไม่น้อยกว่า 200 เชือก เพื่อแสดงให้เห็นถึงความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างช้างกับคน และขนบธรรมเนียมประเพณี และวัฒนธรรมของชาวสุรินทร์ โดยแบ่งการแสดงประกอบด้วยฉากต่างๆดังนี้

1. “จ่าโขลง” เป็นการแสดงถึงความเป็นอยู่ตามธรรมชาติของช้างที่ต้องมีผู้นำ คือ จ่าโขลง
2. “กวย” เป็นการแสดงให้เห็นถึงสภาพชีวิตประจำวันของชาวบ้าน และประเพณีเซ่นผีปะกำ
3. “จากป่ามาสู่บ้าน” เป็นการแสดงคล้องช้างหรือโพนช้าง และการฝึกช้างเพื่อนำมาใช้งาน
4. “ประเพณีเมืองสุรินทร์” เป็นการแสดงถึงภาพรวมของขนบธรรมเนียมประเพณีและวัฒนธรรมอันดีงามของชาวสุรินทร์
5. “ฉลองพระ” เป็นการแสดงถึงความสนุกสนานยินดีอันเกิดจากความเชื่อ โดยใช้ช้างแสดงความสามารถในการเล่นกีฬาและการแข่งขันต่างๆ
6. “พระบารมีปกเกล้า” แสดงให้เห็นถึงขบวนพยุหยาตราทัพ อันเป็นการแสดงถึงแสนยานุภาพของพระมหากษัตริย์ในสมัยโบราณซึ่งได้ทรงปกครองบ้านเมืองให้เกิดความร่มเย็นเป็นสุข ในสมัยนั้นถือว่าช้างเป็นสัตว์สำคัญในกองทัพ
7. “ฉากอำลา” เป็นการแสดงการอำลาของช้างและผู้แสดงด้วยความรักและคิดถึง (จนกว่าจะพบกันใหม่ในปีหน้า)
นอกจากการแสดงฉากต่างๆ ดังกล่าวมาข้างต้นแล้ว ยังได้มีการจัดจำลองภูมิประเทศให้เข้ากับเรื่องราวและยุคสมัยของแต่ละชุดการแสดง เช่น ฉากกำแพงเมือง หมู่บ้าน ป่า เขาและอื่นๆ ซึ่งก่อสร้างและตกแต่งเป็นพิเศษเพื่อความสนุกสนานเพลิดเพลินของท่าน

นอกจากนี้ จังหวัดสุรินทร์ยังได้ส่งเสริมให้มี “งานช้างแฟร์” ซึ่งจัดขึ้นในระหว่างวันที่10-19 พฤศจิกายน (10 วัน 10 คืน) ณ บริเวณสนามกีฬาศรีณรงค์ โดยมีกิจกรรมการออกร้านและนิทรรศการของหน่วยงานต่างๆทั้งส่วนราชการและภาคเอกชน การแสดงมหรสพต่างๆ การแสดงศิลปหัตถกรรมของนักเรียน นักศึกษา การแสดงศิลปหัตถกรรมพื้นบ้านตลอดจนการแสดงเพื่อความบันเทิงเริงรมย์อีกมากมายตลอดงาน

การเดินทาง Travelling to Surin:

รถยนต์ จากกรุงเทพฯ ใช้เส้นทางหลวงหมายเลข 1 (ถนนพหลโยธิน) แยกเข้าทางหลวงหมายเลข 2 (ถนนมิตรภาพ)ที่จังหวัดสระบุรี เข้าเส้นทางโชคชัย-เดชอุดม (ทางหลวงหมายเลข 24 ) ผ่านอำเภอนางรอง อำเภอปราสาท จากอำเภอปราสาทเลี้ยวซ้ายเข้าทางหลวงหมายเลข 214 ตรงเข้าสู่ตัวเมืองจังหวัดสุรินทร์ รวมระยะทาง 450 กิโลเมตร

รถโดยสารประจำทาง จากกรุงเทพฯ มีรถโดยสารประจำทางทั้งรถธรรมดาและรถปรับอากาศออกจากสถานีขนส่งสายภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือทุกวัน ใช้เวลาเดินทางประมาณ 6 ชั่วโมง

รถไฟ จากสถานีรถไฟกรุงเทพฯ (หัวลำโพง) มีรถออกทุกวัน ระยะทาง 420 กิโลเมตร

เครื่องบิน การบินไทยมีเที่ยวบินกรุงเทพฯ-บุรีรัมย์ ทุกวัน เว้นวันอังคารและวันพฤหัสบดี

นอกจากนั้นยังมีรถโดยสารจากตัวเมืองสุรินทร์ไปยังอำเภอต่างๆ ทุกอำเภอและจังหวัดใกล้เคียง การเดินทางในตัวเมืองสุรินทร์ก็มีรถสามล้อรับจ้างอยู่ทั่วไป

Amazing Surin Elephant Round-up

Surin, the northeastern province is very well known to both Thai people and international tourists as “the Land of Elephants.” It has been presenting the Elephant Round-Up for more than 30 years, and it is always scheduled on the third Saturday and Sunday of every November. Native people of Surin, called “Guai”, are skillful in catching wild elephants as well as training them. This year the Round up, the 38th of its kind, take place November 14-15 in the compound of the Elephant Show Stadium in Surin. Each day the show begins at 8:30 AM and ends at about 11:30 AM. The Elephant Round-up in 1998 is newly improved, and consists of seven famous performances, with no less than 200 elephants to help demonstrate the relationship between the elephants and people, as well as the customs and culture of Surin. These performances include:

1. “Cha-Khlong” shows the nature of elephants with their leaders.
2. “Guai” shows how the local people live with a sacred traditional village rite called “Phithi-Sen-Phi-Pakam”.
3. “Jak-Pa-Ma-Su-Ban” show elephant catching and training procedures used to help people in forest.
4. “Pra-Phe-Ni Muang Surin” reflects the Surin local traditions, customs and culture.
5. “Chalong-Phra” is a show to demonstrate the elephant’s talent.
6. “Phra-Barami-Pok-Klao” is a mass procession of elephants that portrays a tradition dating back to ancient times in Thailand. In those days, the elephants were very important to the army as they were used in combat. The procession was a traditional way to represent the King’s power.
7. “Chak-Am-La” is the farewell, or good-bye, show. (Until we meet again next year!)

In each of the performances mentioned above, there is also specially built scenery used (such as the fort, village, forest, mountain and so on) which has been intricately decorated for your pleasure.

In addition to the Round-Up itself, the Surin province is presenting its “Elephant Fair” for ten days and nights between November 10-19 at Srinarong Stadium. Fair activities include performances, exhibitions from the governmental and private sectors, student’s art and handicraft shows, local handicraft shows and countless offerings of exciting entertainment. Travelling to Surin:

By car: from Bangkok, drive along Highway 1 (Phahonyothin Road) and turn right on Highway 2 (Mitraphap Road) at Saraburi Province, then turn to the Chokchai-Dej Udom route (Highway 24) via Nang Rong District and Prasat District before turning left on Highway 214 to Surin Province. The total distance is 450 kilometers.

By bus: from Bangkok, there are daily ordinary and air-conditioned buses leaving the Northeastern Bus Terminal, and the trip takes about 6 hours.

By train: from Bangkok Railway Station (Hua Lam Phong), there are daily trains. The distance is 420 kilometers.

By air: THAI’s flights between Bangkok and Buri Ram are available daily except for Tuesdays and Thursdays.

There is also the local bus service from the provincial city of Surin to all districts (Amphoes) and to nearby provinces. Travelling within Amphoe Muang is possible by tricycle.
