Toilet Signs

hong nam you tee nai?
Finding a toilet or the right section isn't a problem in Thailand if you keep to the main tourist route. The signs are nearly always in Thai and English and there is a picture of a man or woman for the different sections. However, as you travel to more isolated areas you might find it useful to recognise the Thai words.

ห้องน้ำ / สุขา

There are two different Thai words for toilet: hong nam and soo-ka.

Toilet: soo-kaa
Clean toilets: hong nam sa-art

หญิง
Toilet for women (ying):
Ladies: ying
Ladies: hong nam ying
Ladies: soo-paap sa-dtree

ชาย
Toilet for men (chai):
Men: chai
Men: hong nam chai
Gents: soo-paap boo-root

A visitor to my site suggested that I should include the signs that might be on the door. He thought the door to a toilet he went in was locked until someone told him that the door slides!

ดึง
ผลัก
เลื่อน
pull = deung
push = phlak
slide = leun

taang bai soo-kaa
This way to the toilet
soo-kaa 3 baht
aab nam jeut 10 baht
toilet 3 baht - shower 10 baht
hong nam 3 - chern lung raan
Toilet 3 baht - please go to the back of the shop

It is a good idea to pay close attention to these two signs!

ong soo-kaa joot soot tai
The last toilet
brod chai hong soo-kaa tee nee gorn keun yot doi
Please use the toilet here before you go to the to the top of the mountain
